New York State Driver Assessment fee

In addition to the fines and surcharges that the court or DMV may impose forconvictions on traffic tickets, the NYS DMV will impose a driver assessmentfee if you accumulate 6 or more points on your drivers record during an 18month period for violations that occur in New York State, Quebec Canada andOntario Canada. In determining the amount of points accumulated during an18 month period, the points are calculated using the date of violation. Thedriver assessment fee starts at $300 ( $100 per year for 3 years ) for 6 points. Anaccumulation of 8 points on your license during an 18 month period will translateto a $450 driver assessment fee ( $150 per year for 3 years). The higher thepoints, the higher the driver assessment fee.

Those who accumulate 6 or more points within an 18 month period will berequired to pay a drivers assessment fee regardless of whether they hold a NewYork State license, an out of state license or even if they have no license at all.

Most people that simply choose to plead guilty to their Southampton Speedingtickets will end up having to pay an additional driver’s assessment fee starting at$300 whether they realize it or not.

You will also be required to pay a drivers assessment fee if you are convicted ofan alcohol related traffic infraction in New York State, if you are convicted of adrug related traffic violation in New York State, or if it has been determined aftera DMV hearing that you refused a chemical test in New York State.

The New York State driver responsibility program went into effect on November18, 2004. Tickets received prior to that date are not subject to a driverassessment fee.
